We offer a number of 2-hour modules that cover various aspects of Dynamic Assessment work, which are detailed below. Our most popular full-day course 'Rethink Learning using Dynamic Assessment' is a combination of some of the content covered in modules 1, 2, 3 and 4 and is delivered at various intervals throughout the year, both face-to-face and online. The specific dates are always advertised on our website.
Rethink Learning using Dynamic Assessment (Please note that this course is a full day (6 hours))
In this workshop, we cover the fundamentals of dynamic assessment (DA), delve into the practical applications of mediated learning, and consider the Cognitive and Affective Learning Principles that are evident in children's learning. We also look at some materials used in DA, and consider issues relating to putting DA into practice, including feedback and report writing. Includes looking at video footage and real-life cases.

We have on offer the following 2-hour modules.
Module 1) Fundamentals of Dynamic Assessment (2 hours)
This covers the fundamentals of Dynamic Assessment in a unique way using our animation, film clips and group activities. We explore the rationale underlying dynamic assessment and how the approach draws on the ideas of developmental psychologists such as Lev Vygotsky, Reuven Feuerstein, and Carol Dweck.

Module 2) Mediated Learning (2 hours)
We delve into the concept of ‘mediation’ or ‘mediated learning’, demonstrating its potential effectiveness as an approach to teaching and learning. We will break ‘mediated learning’ into 17 components, or ‘principles’, analyse video clips of mediated learning and gain a better understanding of how to put this powerful approach into practice.

Module 3) Cognitive and Affective Principles (2 hours)
On this course we consider how children learn, and which aspects of their behaviour should be observed, nurtured and developed. These are called Cognitive and Affective Learning Principles. We will look at some video clips to understand how best to analyse and intervene with these aspects of learning and emotion.

Module 4) Dynamic assessment and feedforward (2 hours)
In this module we examine how to move forward after using the dynamic assessment approach. A number of techniques are discussed that demonstrate how to set individual learning plans and set individual goals. Video clips from real cases are shown.

Module 5) How to use dynamic assessment with ‘off-the-shelf’ materials (2 hours)
For this module, we look at how you can use any kind of games, puzzles and problem-solving activities when doing dynamic assessment. While there are specific materials available for the use of DA, in this module we will demonstrate how there a number of games that could be used to explore a child’s learning. Video clips will show how this can be done.

Module 6) How to use dynamic assessment remotely (2 hours)
We will demonstrate how dynamic assessment can be implemented online, using the usual online platforms, like Teams, Zoom, remotely. A number of handy tips and strategies are provided so that you can begin to use DA in contexts where you are not able to work face-to-face with the child or young person.

Module 7) Dynamic assessment and the writing of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) (2 hrs)
As the title suggests, this module looks at how you can use Dynamic Assessment when asked to provide professional advice for an EHCP. There are a number of considerations that should be made but the intention is to demonstrate that there are various options other than the use of standardised assessment when asked to contribute to an EHCP.

The following courses (either full-day or half-day) cover specific areas (details below) rather than DA per se:
Working with bilingual, multilingual and EAL children: implications for practice (Please note that this course is a full day (9.30am-4.00pm) and please note that the course DOES NOT look specifically at dynamic assessment but is a general course for those interested in working with these groups of children)
In this workshop, we look at some of the theory and concepts of bilingualism and multilingualism and EAL learning, consider some of the advantages and disadvantages of being raised bilingual according to the literature, and explore implications and practical issues for educational psychologists and related professionals who work with these groups of children and young people. Understanding and Assessing the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children with SEND
This half day training event delivered by Dr Kirstie Rees, author of The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties, will provide participants with a holistic approach to understanding and assessing the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, in both mainstream and specialist establishments. Through the use of case study and discussion, there will be consideration of the internal and external factors which impact upon a child or young person’s engagement and sense of belonging. The session will balance psychological theory and research with practical, evidence-based strategies and resources which EPs can use in their practice and support educational colleagues to apply in a busy school context. The training is underpinned by a strong relationship-based approach and explores ways of obtaining an in-depth knowledge of a child and their strengths and needs.

Metacognition and how to create autonomous learners (Please note that this course is a full day: 6 hours)
We are delighted to be able to offer this workshop, delivered by the author of "How to Create Autonomous Learners", Dr Taryn Moir. This workshop uses the textbook as a focus to outline the theory, practice and the implementation of evidence-based approaches to develop essential metacognitive and self-study skills. The workshop explains how to get students, parents and partners on board and how to implement these ideas across a class, school, or consortium. Click here to book.
